O listă a celor mai inspirate 100 de romane scrise în limba engleză au fost stabilită de experţi, iar printre titluri se numără lucrări moderne, ca "Jurnalul lui Bridget Jones", de Helen Fielding, dar şi opere clasice, precum "Mîndrie şi prejudecată". Scriitori, curatori şi critici, inclusiv jurnalista Mariella Frostrup, au contribuit la selectarea celor 100 de romane scrise în limba engleză, ce au conturat lumea. Jonty Claypole, directorul BBC Arts, a declarat că a dorit ca lista să fie "provocatoare, să genereze dezbateri şi să inspire curiozitate" potrivit Mediafax. Printre romanele incluse în listă s-au mai numărat "Riders", de Jilly Cooper, "Dinţi albi", de Zadie Smith.

Totodată, de pe listă nu au fost omise opere clasice, precum "Să ucizi o pasăre cîntătoare", din 1960, scrisă de Harper Lee, şi "Frankenstein", de Mary Shelley. "Cronicile din Narnia", de C. S. Lewis, "Preaiubita", de Toni Morrison, seria "Harry Potter", a lui J. K. Rowling, şi "Materiile întunecate", de Philip Pullman, au fost incluse şi ele pe listă.

Romanele au fost organizate pe zece categorii tematice, precum "Identitate", "Aventură", "Viaţă, moarte şi alte lumi", "Politică, putere şi proteste", "Clasă şi societate", "Familie şi prietenie", "Crimă şi conflict". De la categoria "Politică, putere şi proteste" nu au lipsit romanele "Minunata lume nouă", al lui Aldous Huxley, şi "V de la Vendetta", de Alan Moore.

"Au fost necesare luni de dezbatere entuziastă şi nu au dezamăgit. Unele sunt capodopere neglijate, iar altele sunt opere clasice foarte iubite", a adăugat Jonty Claypole. Totodată, Claypole a descris lista drept "una mai diversă, în comparaţie cu cele văzute anterior. Cel mai bun lucru este că aceasta reprezintă începutul unui an cu documentare, profiluri de scriitori, podcast-uri şi evenimente gîndite să îi inspire pe toţi să citească mai multe romane, datorită beneficilor pe care lectura le aduce".
